Dance Class Defined: What to Expect in a Tap Dance Class

What is Tap Dance?

Tap is a rhythmic style of dance that uses shoes with metal taps attached under the toes and heels to make clear percussive sounds. Tap technique emphasizes coordination and speed of movement while maintaining balance and upper body control. Steps include shuffles, flaps, cramp rolls, time steps, and pull-backs. Tap is a style accessible for all ages and all levels, is great exercise, and can be a fun introduction to dance!

What to Expect in a Tap Class

A tap class will start with exercises at the ballet barre or in the center to warm-up the feet and ankles. The tap instructor may continue with exercises across the floor and conclude with combinations or tap choreography. Tap skills build on one another, so practice and mastery of basic steps (such as shuffles and flaps) prepare the student for more intricate movement combinations and tempo changes.

What to Expect at Your Studio

Tap classes can range from 30 minutes to an hour for beginner through advanced levels. Some studios can begin tap instruction as early as 2 years of age and can continue into adult ages.

Studios should be equipped with proper supportive flooring to ensure safe training and minimize slipping. Ballet barres may be utilized in a tap class depending on the instructor’s curriculum.

Recital performances are a great way to showcase skills learned in a tap class, so check with your studio owner to see if you have opportunities to perform.

What to Wear to Class

Each studio’s clothing requirements differ, but leotards, tights, leggings, or other dancewear should be sufficient. There is a wide variety of tap shoes available with different price points, so inquire with your studio director about her recommendation.

Long hair should be pulled back into a ponytail, braid, or bun, and jewelry should be minimal.
