Dance Class Defined: What to Expect in a Preschool Combination Dance Class

As you begin your dance studio search, you may find that many schools offer “combination” dance classes, especially for preschool age children. This article will shed some light on what your young child can expect from these wonderful introductory dance classes!

What is a Combination Dance Class?

A preschool combination dance class, most likely taken without a parent, is a class that combines two or more dance styles into one 30 to 60 minute time frame. Dance styles included within the combination class can include ballet, jazz, tap, acrobatics, or other popular dance styles. Combination classes are generally geared for children ages 3 through 5, but some studios will offer combination classes for older age groups as well. Combination classes introduce your young child to a variety of dance styles while encouraging independence away from a parent or caregiver.

What to Expect in Class

Class structure depends on which styles of dance are offered in the combination class. If your child enrolls in a Tap/Ballet combo class, for instance, your child will learn basic tap steps and combinations for the first part of class, and then finish with ballet steps and terminology for the last part of class. Since your child is still young, there will be lots of imaginative imagery and prop play interspersed throughout these fun lessons!

What to Expect at Your Studio

Children in a combination class will generally perform in a dance recital, but you’ll need to check with your studio for costume requirements and number of routines that will be performed.

What to Wear to Class

Check with your dance studio on the required dancewear for combination classes. Most studios will simply require a basic leotard, tights, and appropriate shoes for dance styles offered in the class. If your child has longer hair, your dance teacher will likely want it pulled back into a ponytail or bun.
