What is Lyrical Dance?

Lyrical is a popular dance style that incorporates the grace, elegance, and controlled movements of ballet technique with the power, energy, and strength of jazz dance. Dancers use the lyrics of a song to convey a message or storyline throughout the choreography. Lyrical classes generally focus on classic technical skills (such as port de bras arm movements, turns, and leg extensions), self-expression, and performance qualities (such as transitions between movement and emoting to the audience).

What to Expect in a Lyrical Class

A typical lyrical dance class will likely include a warm-up with technical elements, stretch and strengthening exercises, progressions across the floor, and choreography. Some studios may also provide time in class for students to interpret music and improvise their own movements.

What to Expect at Your Studio

Lyrical dance classes typically range from 45 minutes to an hour for beginner through advanced levels. Because the nature of lyrical dance is to interpret song lyrics and emote feelings through movement, most lyrical classes are geared to school-age dancers and above. Many studios will recommend or require students take an additional ballet class to enhance their lyrical dance technique.

What to Wear to Class

Each studio’s dress code requirements vary, but leotards, tights, leggings, or other non-restrictive dancewear should be sufficient. Some teachers require specific dance shoes for lyrical, while others prefer their dancers have bare feet. Check with your studio about their class clothing requirements.

Long hair should be pulled back into a ponytail, braid, or bun, and jewelry should be minimal.
